Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have made a significant discovery in the eastern Himalayas, identifying two new species of lichen moths. Named Caulocera hollowayi and Asura buxa, these findings were documented in the renowned journal 'Zootaxa' by a dedicated team of Indian researchers.

The moths were discovered in Sikkim and West Bengal, respectively. This discovery not only enriches our understanding of India's rich moth biodiversity but also underscores the importance of studying lesser-known insect groups like Lepidoptera, according to ZSI Director Dhriti Banerjee.

Lichen moths hold ecological significance as their caterpillars consume lichens, making them vital indicators of environmental health. Their presence helps monitor air quality in the fragile ecosystems of the Himalayas, providing valuable insights into broader ecological trends.
