The European Central Bank (ECB) is preparing for a likely increase in interest rates, according to policymaker Francois Villeroy de Galhau. While the timing of this move remains undecided, Villeroy noted that rising energy costs are influencing inflation in the eurozone.
Villeroy, who also serves as Governor of the Bank of France, indicated that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are negatively impacting economic forecasts. He stated that current circumstances align more closely with an intermediate adverse scenario, rather than the ECB's baseline forecast.
Speaking at Paris Sciences Po University, Villeroy emphasized that while it's too soon to schedule interest rate hikes, the ECB remains ready to act decisively when required.
