Najafgarh's New Kennels to Ease Overcrowding at Dog Shelters

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is tackling overcrowding at dog shelters by constructing additional kennels at a sterilisation centre in Najafgarh. The new facility will accommodate 450-500 more dogs monthly and is part of an expansion to bolster the Animal Birth Control programme in southwest Delhi.

Efforts to ease overcrowding in Delhi's dog shelters are gaining momentum as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) undertakes the construction of new kennels at a sterilisation centre in Najafgarh. The initiative aims to accommodate an extra 450 to 500 dogs each month.

This project, implemented at the Bijwasan sterilisation centre, is orchestrated by an NGO and includes 14 additional kennel units. Approximately Rs 28 lakh has been designated for the engineering department in the Najafgarh zone, which began construction roughly 15 days ago, with a completion target within 60 days.

The Animal Birth Control programme in Delhi stands to benefit from increased intake and sterilisation capabilities through this expansion. Future plans include developing another shelter on Bella Road, and the MCD is focused on enhancing facilities at multiple sites to expedite sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination efforts.
