Rains Trigger Land Threat: Locals Demand Safety Measures

A major landslide, triggered by intense rainfall, occurred at Ghatigad on the Manikaran-Barshaini road in Kullu district on Saturday morning, causing substantial damage to numerous vehicles. Fortunately, all occupants evacuated safely before the landslide struck. However, this incident heightened local anxiety, as persistent landslides along this route continue to endanger commuters.

Last Thursday, another frightening episode occurred when an earth-mover operator narrowly escaped as boulders struck his machinery during debris-clearing operations. This frequent peril has compelled locals to threaten a road blockade on April 30 unless authorities implement adequate safety measures. Among their demands is the construction of a Bailey bridge on Sheila Road as a viable alternative route.

In response, Congress MLA Sunder Singh Thakur visited the landslide-prone area with officials, directing them to expedite the necessary approvals, particularly those required by the Forest Rights Act and Gram Sabha. Meanwhile, forecasts from the local meteorological department indicate continued storms and light rain, exacerbating the urgent need for action on these safety concerns.
