Neglect and Mismanagement: Thane's Sewage Treatment Plant Crisis

Local BJP leaders have criticized Thane Municipal Corporation for neglecting a major sewage treatment plant in Kopri. Despite a capacity of 120 MLD, it processes only 58 MLD. The plant faces financial burdens and operational inefficiencies, drawing fines and risking environmental hazards due to mismanagement.

On Saturday, local BJP leaders alleged critical neglect by the Thane Municipal Corporation concerning a major sewage treatment plant in the Kopri region. The plant, they claimed, is significantly underperforming, handling only 58 MLD of wastewater despite its 120 MLD capacity.

MLA Sanjay Kelkar and MLC Niranjan Davkhare inspected the Kanhaiyya Nagar facility, followed by a press conference blaming the corporation for the plant's inefficiencies. They highlighted that the National Green Tribunal fined the corporation Rs 90 crore for poor operation, with an annual Rs 9 crore interest on the construction loan and Rs 10 crore paid for maintenance exacerbating the financial strain.

Locals also expressed concerns, reporting that sludge from the plant is allegedly being disposed of in a nearby nullah, now covered, heightening flood risks. Originally designed to enhance city waterways using advanced technologies, the Kanhaiyya Nagar STP remains beleaguered by financial and operational challenges.
