At least 14 individuals were fatally struck by lightning in various regions of Bangladesh as severe thunderstorms swept through the nation, authorities reported on Monday.
Victims were primarily farmers and outdoor laborers, with many others sustaining injuries severe enough to require hospitalization. Lightning incidents claim numerous lives every year in Bangladesh, now recognized as a natural disaster issue since 2016.
Experts link the increasing incidence of fatal lightning strikes to deforestation, which has reduced the number of tall trees that once diverted lightning. High temperatures and humidity during pre-monsoon months contribute to these dangerous weather patterns.
