Dharavi's Bold Step: Inclusive Housing for Upper-Floor Residents
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is extending home ownership benefits to upper-floor residents, contingent upon ground-floor residents' eligibility. A novel policy allows these residents to claim 300 sq ft homes in Mumbai's metropolitan area if they prove occupancy before a 2022 cut-off, marking an inclusive shift in urban renewal practices.
In an unprecedented move, the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) is offering housing to upper-floor residents, contingent on the status of ground-floor occupants. This change aims to provide these residents with new homes measuring 300 sq ft, located within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, provided they can prove occupancy before a specified cut-off date.
According to a government resolution dated October 4, 2024, beneficiaries have the option of a hire-purchase scheme, involving nominal rent over 25 years leading to ownership, or upfront payment for early ownership. This policy marks a departure from traditional slum rehabilitation efforts that often ignored upper-floor occupants.
Eligibility hinges on a hierarchy of documents, with electricity bills topping the list, followed by rent or purchase agreements, and government-issued IDs. Affidavits are last in priority, needing ground-floor resident certification. The project stands out for its inclusivity, aiming to set a new precedent in urban renewal policies.
