A Sunday tragedy unfolded as a 10-year-old boy succumbed to injuries after the collapse of a defunct water tank staircase in Siddharthnagar. The incident left two other children in critical condition and sparked a dramatic rescue operation.
Authorities revealed that the structure, built 30 years ago and near the Kashiram Housing locality, had been declared unsafe. Nonetheless, it became a popular spot for children to climb and shoot social media reels. On Saturday, five children scaled the tank; the descent proved fatal for some as the staircase gave way, causing three of them to fall.
An army helicopter, under instructions from the Chief Minister's Office, was deployed to rescue two stranded children from atop the tank. The operation was executed efficiently amid challenging weather conditions. The community mourns this preventable loss, with calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations.
