In a tragic oversight, a two-year-old girl lost her life after falling into the Mukundpur drain, emphasizing the complexities of urban infrastructure management. The Irrigation and Flood Control Department had last year requested the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to take over the drain's maintenance.
The drain, classified as a smaller municipal utility, lies between Gujjar Chowk and Ramlila Ground. Despite the I&FC Department's request, the MCD reportedly did not assume its maintenance responsibilities, sources confirmed.
Following the tragic event, a junior engineer from the I&FC Department was dismissed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who described the incident as 'extremely distressing and alarming.'
