Zee Entertainment Battles Streaming Giant Over Music Rights
Zee Entertainment has filed a lawsuit against the Reliance-Disney joint venture, accusing it of using its copyrighted music post-license expiry. Seeking $3 million in damages, the legal conflict highlights ongoing tensions over content rights amid India's broadcasting market consolidation. Zee also pursues overseas arbitration over a cricket licensing deal.
Zee Entertainment has launched a legal battle against India's largest entertainment company, a joint venture between Reliance and Disney, for allegedly using its copyrighted music without permission. Court documents reveal Zee is seeking $3 million in damages for ongoing unauthorized use on JioStar's streaming platform.
The lawsuit, filed in New Delhi, is the latest episode in a series of legal disputes between Zee and JioStar following their $8.5 billion merger in 2024. The conflict spotlights growing tensions over content rights as India's media market undergoes significant consolidation. Both parties are also embroiled in a $1 billion arbitration concerning a cricket licensing deal.
Zee claims the infringement occurred at least 50 times after licensing agreements expired. The court has ordered JioStar to cease any infringement while proceedings continue, with the next hearing slated for July 23. Both companies have exchanged legal notices, with JioStar denying that past and archived content constitutes infringement.
