In an effort to draw attention to fuel conservation, three judges from the Orissa High Court took to bicycles for their commute on Monday. Justices Savitri Ratho, V Narasingh, and Sibo Sankar Mishra pedaled to the High Court premises from near the Judicial Academy, a move that drew significant attention.
The judicial trio's one-kilometer journey, though carried out silently, resonated loudly as an exhortation for responsible fuel use and environmentally friendly travel. Their actions come during a period of public unrest regarding fuel availability, particularly petrol and diesel, across Odisha.
Amid government assurances of sufficient supply, panic buying has caused mounting queues at fuel stations. The judges' ride dovetails with broader governmental measures urging reduced fuel consumption, including the Chief Minister, and even more administrative advice for vehicle pooling and judicious use of official vehicles.
