Malaysia's oil and gas giant Petronas is on an ambitious exploration mission in Suriname's offshore Block 52. This block was recognized as commercially viable for natural gas development following substantial discoveries last year.

The announcement was made by the managing director of Staatsolie, Suriname's state-owned oil company, on Wednesday.

He revealed to Reuters via a phone interview that they expect to declare oil commerciality in the block within the next 18 months. This move signifies a significant step in the region's energy sector.
