Tamil Nadu Farmer Innovates for Coconut Farming Success, Gains UN Recognition

A farmer in Tamil Nadu, Valluvan, shifted to a multi-crop, tree-based agriculture model, turning his farm into a profitable venture. Previously facing losses, he now earns Rs 2.5-3 lakh per acre annually. His success was recognized by the UN FAO, earning him a Soil Farmer Hero title.

A visionary farmer from Tamil Nadu has remarkably turned the financial challenges of coconut farming into a profitable enterprise, recognized globally by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. Valluvan, who operates his farm in Pollachi, faced persistent losses on every coconut tree until a strategic change in 2009.

Guided by the Isha Foundation's Save Soil - Cauvery Calling initiative, Valluvan transitioned to multi-crop, multi-tier tree-based farming. This approach allowed him to increase his crop variety to over 14 types while significantly boosting his annual earnings per acre. Despite droughts affecting the region, his farm remains resilient through advanced practices like mulching and rainwater harvesting.

The success story, praised by Anand Ethirajalu of Cauvery Calling, highlights Valluvan’s model as both an economic hedge and a solution to climate challenges. The initiative has already led to the planting of millions of trees aiming to restore ecological balance in the Cauvery river basin. However, further support is needed to overcome barriers to broader adoption of such sustainable practices.
