A deadly elephant attack near Athirappally claimed the life of a 62-year-old man, marking the third incident in a week, according to a senior Forest Department official. The attack occurred early Saturday morning, when the man and his relatives attempted to drive away a wild elephant, which tragically turned on them.

State Forest Minister Shibu Baby John expressed the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address the ongoing wildlife issues. Admitting there is no quick fix, John emphasized the government's commitment to developing a robust strategy to prevent future incidents. Immediate financial support of Rs 14 lakh has been allocated to the deceased's family.

Local residents remain concerned about their safety, criticizing the government's handling of wildlife threats. Despite prior warnings and existing fencing, the recent fatality underscores persistent vulnerabilities. As part of a new approach, the Forest Department is tasked with assuming responsibility for victim support and will convene to address gaps in wildlife management strategies.
