In a significant reshuffle, BP has appointed seasoned insider Gordon Birrell to helm its upstream unit while Richard Harding steps in as interim head of downstream. This leadership change comes as part of a broader strategic shift to enhance operational efficiency and cut costs.

The restructure follows the dismissal of former chairman Albert Manifold over bullying allegations—a claim he denies—as BP strives to restore investor confidence through a renewed focus on its core oil and gas operations.

Under the new structure, upstream will consolidate oil, gas, and carbon capture efforts, while downstream oversees refining, pipelines, and biofuels. The changes, effective internally from July 1 and externally by January 1, 2027, are expected to streamline complexities, according to CEO Meg O'Neill.
