The Strategic Gamble: Trump's Interest in Kharg Island

President Donald Trump has expressed interest in seizing Kharg Island, Iran's key oil infrastructure hub. The move could disrupt Iran's energy trade but risks extending the conflict. Analysts warn that while the U.S. could take the island quickly, it would leave troops vulnerable to attack and require significant logistical support.

The Strategic Gamble: Trump's Interest in Kharg Island

President Donald Trump recently conveyed his ambition to take control of Kharg Island, a pivotal point for Iran's oil operations. Analysts argue that while the U.S. military might quickly seize this hub, such an action could endanger American troops and potentially prolong the ongoing conflict.

Kharg Island holds strategic importance, located 16 miles from Iran's mainland in the Gulf. Before the conflict began on February 28, it was responsible for managing 90% of Iran's oil exports. Capturing it could heavily disrupt Iran's energy sector and exert pressure on its economy, as Iran stands as the third-largest producer in OPEC.

Earlier this year, the U.S. conducted airstrikes on Kharg Island and considered deploying ground forces. Despite Trump's vocal intentions, no formal plan has been revealed. Experts warn that occupying Kharg could escalate hostilities rather than deliver decisive outcomes, highlighting vulnerabilities to potential missile and drone attacks.
