Ethiopia seeks association with Russia to establish biological research centre

New reports suggest that Ethiopian government is expanding its business ties on several frontiers with Russia. The ties also range from nuclear energy development to Russians investment in mining in the East African country.

Ethiopia is going to get a new biological research centre soon. Russian Science Academy and agreed to establish the biological research centre in association with the Innovation and Technology Ministry of Ethiopia.

The proposed biological research centre will be established after Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed consults the matter with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is indicated during the meeting of Ethiopia’s Minister of Innovation and Technology, Getahun Mekuria and the newly appointed Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia Yevgeny Terekhin, as reported by NewBusinessEthiopia.com.

The two sides have also discussed the planned joint commission of Ethiopia – Russia meeting agendas and schedule, according to the social media post of Innovation and Technology Ministry of Ethiopia.

They have also consulted on the implementation of the roadmap for developing nuclear technology in Ethiopia for the use of medical and power generation, the report stated. It is indicated that the two sides have also discussed on how Russian investors will invest in the mining sector in Ethiopia mainly, gold and tantalum mining. Latest reports show that income of Ethiopia from minerals export has been declining over the past few years, the above-mentioned source noted.

This is not the first time Ethiopia is associating with Russia on multiple frontiers, mainly related to the establishment of a biological research centre. Last month, both the countries signed an agreement setting out a three-year plan to concentrate on the construction of a centre for nuclear science and technology and also a nuclear power plant.
