Monday was a good news/bad news day for the Los Angeles Angels.
All-Star center fielder Mike Trout, on the 10-day disabled list since Friday because of inflammation in his right wrist, might be out longer because he's attending to a personal family matter.
Meanwhile, pitching-hitting threat Shohei Ohtani moved closer to a return to the mound before the end of the season.
Trout, scheduled to come off the DL on Thursday, may not return in time for the opener of a four-game series against the Texas Rangers that day, according to MLB.com.
Trout, who finished fourth in American League MVP voting in 2017 despite missing 48 games, is batting .309 with 30 home runs and 60 RBIs in 109 games this season.
Ohtani threw a 33-pitch bullpen session Monday at about 70 percent, according to Orange County Register baseball writer Jeff Fletcher. "He said he felt good. Still moving toward a return on the mound," Fletcher posted on Twitter.
Ohtani, the 24-year-old two-way player from Japan who has 12 homers and 34 RBIs principally as a designated hitter in his rookie season, has gone 4-1 with 61 strikeouts and a 3.10 ERA in nine starts for the Angels.
He hasn't pitched since June 6 after sustaining a sprained ligament in his right (throwing) elbow that required rehabilitation.
Ohtani tossed a light bullpen session of 23 pitches on Saturday, throwing 19 fastballs, two sliders and two curveballs. The team hopes he can avoid Tommy John surgery through patient rehab.
