Mets place 2B Cano on IL, add OF Hamilton to roster

The New York Mets placed veteran infielder Robinson Cano on the 10-day injured list with a left adductor strain and added outfielder Billy Hamilton to the active roster. Cano's injury is considered to be the more serious Grade 2 strain and his timetable for a return is unknown. The 37-year old was off to a hot start, batting .412 over 11 games with a home run and seven RBIs.

Now in his 16th season, Cano is a career .303 hitter over 2,196 games with the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees and Mets. It is yet another blow to the Mets offense after designated hitter Yoenis Cespedes opted out of the season over the weekend as a COVID-19 precaution.

Hamilton, 29, was just acquired in a trade from the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. He never played in a game for the Giants and has been on three separate teams -- the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves -- over the previous two seasons. A career .242 hitter, Hamilton has played in 809 career games, 690 of those with the Reds from 2013-19.
