Snedeker vows to keep attacking after 59 in Greensboro

Brandt Snedeker shot 11-under-par 59 in the first round at the Wyndham Championship on Thursday, before vowing to keep attacking at an event with a recent history of very low winning scores.

His course record earned a four-stroke lead over fellow Americans Ryan Moore and John Oda at Sedgefield Country Club, which is at the mercy of the field after a wet summer left it soft and defenseless.

NFL notebook: Elway says Kaepernick 'had his chance' to join Broncos

Asked Thursday if the Denver Broncos would consider signing Colin Kaepernick as a veteran backup, general manager John Elway said the quarterback's opportunity to join the Broncos came and went in 2016. "Colin had his chance to be here," Elway told reporters, referencing the Broncos' trade discussions with the San Francisco 49ers during the 2016 offseason. "We offered him a contract. He didn't take it. So, as I said it in my deposition (for Kaepernick's collusion grievance against the NFL) -- and I don't know if I'm legally able to say this -- but he's had his chance to be here. He passed it."

Ross and Kocian add names to Nassar victims list

Gymnast Kyla Ross said on Thursday she too was sexually abused by Larry Nassar, becoming the last member of the so-called Fierce Five team that won gold for the United States at the 2012 London Olympics to speak openly about being a victim of the former national team doctor. In an interview with "CBS This Morning," Ross and 2016 Olympic team gold medalist Madison Kocian said a "culture of silence" within USA Gymnastics had allowed Nassar to prey on young athletes for years.

Report: Packers, Rodgers 'creeping' toward extension

The Green Bay Packers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers are "creeping along towards a deal," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday, citing a source. Schefter added that both sides are motivated to get a long-term extension done, with the biggest issue being the fact that there is no ceiling on a contract that will make Rodgers the highest-paid player in NFL history.

Fowler confirms the injury, will skip first playoff event

Rickie Fowler announced that he will skip next week's The Northern Trust to let his injured oblique injury heal. Fowler reportedly played through the injury the past two tournaments, and he admitted after the third round of last week's PGA Championship that he would need time off to allow the condition to improve. He led after the first round at Bellerive Country Club but ultimately finished in a tie for 12th.

The conclusion to the match was delayed again on Thursday by about four hours but when the red-hot Romanian finally returned to the court, she wasted little time sealing the deal.

MLB notebook: Urena suspended for Acuna HBP

Miami Marlins right-hander Jose Urena received a six-game suspension from Major League Baseball on Thursday for drilling Atlanta Braves rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. with the first pitch of the game the previous night. Urena was ejected from the game after plunking Acuna, who had homered to lead off each of the previous three contests against the Marlins, above the left elbow, a pitch that led to both benches clearing and Braves manager Brian Snitker getting tossed by the umpires, too.
