Report: Brewers claim Reds RHP Harvey off waivers
- Country:
- United States
Matt Harvey was claimed off waivers by the Milwaukee Brewers, who must complete a trade with the Cincinnati Reds by Friday at 1:30 p.m. ET in order to keep him.
MLB Network reported the Brewers won the claim after Harvey was placed on revocable waivers.
The Brewers are tied for the second wild card entering Friday's games and are only a half game out of the first wild card.
The Chicago Cubs hold a 3 1/2-game lead in the National League Central entering the weekend.
Harvey has a 4.91 ERA between the New York Mets and Reds, with whom his numbers have improved. Cincinnati acquired Harvey for catcher Devin Mesoraco in May.
The 29-year-old Harvey was 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA when he was designated for assignment by the Mets. Three days later, the Reds completed the trade.
Critical in Harvey's turnaround is an increase in first-pitch strikes to 63.3 percent. He is averaging only 5 1/3 innings per start and his strikeout numbers aren't what they once were -- currently 6.9 Ks per 9 IP.
But the Brewers' starting rotation has collectively average numbers, with each of its current five starters above 4.00 ERA.
