Los Angeles Chargers to bring back Antonio Gates for 16th season

On a day when cuts were expected to dominate the headlines, it was the addition of a very familiar name in football circles that perhaps made the biggest noise in the NFL.

The Los Angeles Chargers announced Sunday that they are bringing back tight end Antonio Gates for a 16th season with the franchise after the sides reached a deal.

General manager Tom Telesco said in a radio interview the Chargers reached out to Gates in June to gauge his interest in playing for the team this season after likely starter Hunter Henry went down with a torn ACL. There is a chance Henry can play this season, but the team wanted a proven option at tight end.

The 38-year-old Gates, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection who has 114 touchdown catches, an NFL record for a tight end, caught just 30 passes for 316 yards and three TDs last season.

Among the day's other moves, the biggest brow-raisers came in Denver and New York.

The Broncos picked up quarterback Kevin Hogan -- waived Saturday by Washington -- and in turn cut ties with 2016 first-round pick Paxton Lynch, whom they drafted to be their quarterback of the future.

The Giants, with the No. 2 spot to make claims on the waiver wire, added six players. Among the players waived to make room for the additions was quarterback Davis Webb, their third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
