Golden Knights acquire Pacioretty from Canadiens

The Vegas Golden Knights acquired All-Star forward Max Pacioretty from the Montreal Canadiens late Sunday night in exchange for Tomas Tatar, prospect Nick Suzuki and a second-round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Vegas announced the deal for the 29-year-old Pacioretty, who has played all 626 of his career NHL games with Montreal, for whom he was named a captain in 2015. However, he is entering the final year of a six-year contract and had regularly been tied to trade rumors since last season's deadline.

U.S. Olympic Committee board chair Probst to step down

U.S. Olympic Committee Board Chair Larry Probst will step down at the end of the year and be replaced by board member Susanne Lyons, who until recently was the acting CEO, USOC said on Monday Probst, 68, was first elected chair in October 2008 and recently oversaw the opening of the U.S. Center for SafeSport, an independent entity that aims to help the sports community to respond to incidents of abuse.

U.S. MMA fighter Jeff Monson elected to local council in Russia

U.S. mixed martial arts fighter Jeffrey Monson, granted Russian citizenship by President Vladimir Putin in May, was elected on Sunday to the council of deputies of a small city just outside Moscow, official election results showed on Monday. Monson, 47, a tattooed cage fighter known as The Snowman, registered in June to run for a seat on the council of Krasnogorsk, northwest of Moscow, where election documents say he now works as a coach in a sports club.

Controversial U.S. Open prompts promises of improvement

Issues of sexism, officiating double standards and adverse playing conditions have dominated the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Open, raising uncomfortable questions and prompting authorities to promise a review of existing policies. Chair umpires took center stage at Flushing Meadows this year, more than at any other tournament in recent memory, and culminated with Serena Williams being reduced to tears at her treatment in the women's final.

Golf: Bradley beats Rose in playoff to win BMW Championship

American Keegan Bradley ended a six-year drought when he won the BMW Championship in a playoff with Justin Rose on Monday, though the Englishman's consolation was to become world number one. Bradley parred the first extra hole to edge Rose after the pair had finished regulation on 20-under-par 260 at waterlogged Aronimink in suburban Philadelphia. Rose missed a four-foot putt that would have extended the playoff but still became the 22nd different player to hold the world number one ranking.

ITF defends U.S. Open chair umpire, Ramos

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has given its backing to Portuguese chair umpire Carlos Ramos who Serena Williams branded a "liar" and a "thief" during her U.S. Open final defeat by Japan's Naomi Osaka on Saturday. Williams, who was seeking a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles title, was given a warning for a coaching violation before incurring a point penalty for smashing her racket. After accusing Ramos of being "a thief for stealing a point from me", she was docked a game.

Golf: Finau gets final spot on U.S. Ryder Cup team

Tony Finau was named by United States captain Jim Furyk on Monday as the final member of the team for this month's Ryder Cup. Furyk did not pull any surprises when he chose Finau to round out his 12-man team for the Sept. 28-30 event against Europe in Paris.

MLB roundup: Red Sox stop Astros' streak on a walk-off hit

Mitch Moreland hit a walk-off single with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Boston Red Sox averted a series sweep with a 6-5 victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday at Fenway Park. Moreland finished 2-for-2 after entering as a pinch hitter. His single to left field scored pinch runner Tzu-Wei Lin and came against right-hander Hector Rondon (2-3). Lin was in scoring position thanks to Xander Bogaerts, who capped a 4-for-4 night with a single that placed a runner in scoring position against Rondon.

NFL roundup: Rodgers returns to lead Pack comeback

Green Bay overcame a franchise-record, 17-point fourth-quarter deficit after quarterback Aaron Rodgers revived the offense and guided his team to a 24-23 comeback win over visiting Chicago in both teams' season opener. Rodgers, who briefly left the game due to a left knee injury, finished 20 of 30 for 286 yards (273 in the second half) and three touchdowns (all in the fourth quarter) with no interceptions. Trailing 20-0 early in the second half, the Packers pumped the life back into Lambeau Field on a 75-yard touchdown from Rodgers to Randall Cobb with 2:13 left to complete the rally.
