Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu has been hospitalized in Cleveland with an infection in his right thigh, the team announced Tuesday.

The White Sox said the ailment is unrelated to his recent stay on the disabled list.

The team is in Cleveland and will open a three-game series on Tuesday night. He is expected to miss this series, and beyond that, his status will be day to day, the team said.

Abreu recently missed playing time while he recovered from surgery to relieve pain caused by testicular torsion. The 31-year-old is batting .265 with 22 home runs and 78 RBIs in 128 games played. Now in his fifth season with the White Sox, he had more than 100 RBI in each of his previous seasons.
