Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Seth Jones will miss at least a month after suffering a sprained knee in Tuesday's preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres, the team announced Wednesday.
An MRI revealed a second-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee. He is expected to need four to six weeks of recovery time, according to general manager Jarmo Kekalainen.
Jones, who turns 24 on Oct. 3, had a career season in 2017-18. The first-time All-Star tallied 16 goals and 41 assists in 78 games. The 16 goals tied Zach Werenski for the team record for a season by a defenseman.
Jones began his NHL career with the Nashville Predators, joining Columbus in a trade for center Ryan Johansen on Jan. 6, 2016. He has 45 goals and 137 assists in 393 career games.
The Blue Jackets open the regular season at Detroit on Oct. 4.
