MLB roundup: Yankees clinch top AL wild card, tie HR record

Aaron Judge hit his first home run since returning from a fractured right wrist, and it was the homer that tied the all-time single-season team record as the New York Yankees clinched home-field advantage in the American League wild-card game with an 11-6 victory over the host Boston Red Sox on Friday night. The Yankees reached 264 homers, tying the single-season record set by the 1997 Seattle Mariners.

Yankees' Sabathia suspended five games in 2019

Major League Baseball announced suspensions Saturday for New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia and Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Andrew Kittredge for incidents that occurred in the sixth inning of Thursday afternoon's game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. Sabathia earned a five-game suspension for the start of next season and received an undisclosed fine for intentionally plunking Rays catcher Jesus Sucre in the bottom of the sixth after warnings had been issued.

Arrest made in shooting death of LSU's Sims

Police in Baton Rouge, La., announced Saturday that a suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of LSU basketball player Wayde Sims on Friday. The Baton Rouge Police Department announced the arrest of Dyteon Simpson, 20, at an 11 a.m. ET news conference. They had released a video of the shooting on Friday, asking for help identifying a man seen in the footage.

Doubles specialist Pierre-Hugues Herbert continued his impressive singles run in Shenzhen, China, saving two match points Saturday in a thrilling 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (8) semifinal upset of seventh-seeded Alex De Minaur. The Frenchman, the winner of three Grand Slam titles in doubles, saved the match points in the third-set tiebreaker at 6-5 and 7-6. Herbert served five of his nine aces against the Australian in the final set.

Torres' blast gives Yankees MLB home run record

The fourth-inning home run by New York rookie Gleyber Torres on Saturday at Boston was the 265th homer of the season for the Yankees, surpassing the 1997 Seattle Mariners for the most in a single season in major league history. It was the 24th homer of the season for Torres, who drove a 1-1 fastball from Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez over the right-field fence.
