Baker Mayfield set for first home start as Cleveland Browns host Baltimore Ravens
Quarterback Baker Mayfield makes his first home start Sunday when the Cleveland Browns host the division-rival Baltimore Ravens.
Mayfield's first overall start didn't end well as the Browns (1-2-1) squandered a 28-14 lead and fell 45-42 in overtime at Oakland. He finished 21 of 41 for 295 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions and two lost fumbles.
Sunday, against one of the NFL's best defences, Mayfield will have to do a lot better.
"Obviously, the most important thing is taking care of the ball," Mayfield said. "No matter if it is communication or decision-making, the most important thing is the football and making sure that we give our team the most opportunities to win..."
The Ravens' defence ranks second in the league in yards allowed per game (275.8) and tied for third in points allowed (16.2). They shut out the Steelers in the second half last week. The Browns' offence is averaging 366 yards per game.
For the Browns' line to give Mayfield time to throw, a key matchup will be left tackle Desmond Harrison, an undrafted rookie, versus linebacker Terrell Suggs.
"He has gotten better over the last couple of weeks," Browns coach Hue Jackson said of Harrison. "This is a tall task. You are talking about Terrell Suggs, arguably one of the best players in this league. It is going to be a real challenge for him, but I think our guys are up to the challenge."
The Ravens (3-1) are rolling thanks to quarterback Joe Flacco and his new group of speedy wide receivers. Willie Snead and Michael Crabtree have 18 catches each, and John Brown has 15 for 338 yards. His 22.5-yard average is third-best in the NFL.
Flacco, meanwhile, is off to one of his best starts. His 1,252 passing yards are his second-most through the first quarter of a season -- trailing only his 2012 start by 17 yards -- and his eight touchdowns are tied for the most he's had through the first four games of a season (2009).
"We have the capability of doing so much and getting a lot of chunk yardage," Flacco told the team's website. "We're still leaving some stuff out there, which is a positive when you look at it. We have the potential to be even more than what we've been the last few weeks, and that's exciting."
Cleveland's defence ranks in the bottom half of the AFC in yards allowed but leads the NFL with 13 takeaways. They'll be without starting cornerback Terrance Mitchell (broken wrist), who was placed on injured reserve.
The Ravens will add cornerback Jimmy Smith, who served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy. In addition, rookie tight end Hayden Hurst, the team's top draft, expects to make his debut after recovering from a stress fracture in his foot.
Under head coach John Harbaugh, Baltimore is 18-2 versus Cleveland, including 9-1 on the road. The Ravens have won five straight games against the Browns and four in a row at FirstEnergy Stadium.
"(This is) a very good Cleveland Browns team, a very young team," Harbaugh said. "They've transformed the team over the last couple years, and they're playing very well, so it'll be a big challenge for us."
