Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale was hospitalized Sunday due to a stomach ailment, the team announced during Game 2 of the American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros.
According to the Red Sox, Sale was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital in the afternoon for observation. He was to remain in the hospital overnight for evaluation.
After Boston beat Houston 7-5 on Sunday night to even the ALCS at once game apiece, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Sale's condition, "From what I know, it's nothing serious, but obviously whenever you have to go to the hospital, you gotta be, quote/unquote, worried. But he should be fine. Hopefully, we get news in the upcoming hours and he'll join us in Houston."
Sale, 29, pitched four uneven innings Saturday in Game 1 of the ALCS, a 7-2 Houston victory. He allowed just one hit and struck out five but yielded two runs, due in large part to four walks and a hit batter.
In 27 regular-season starts this year, Sale went 12-4 with a 2.11 ERA. He struck out 237 batters in 158 innings, missing time twice due to disabled-list stints caused by an inflamed left (pitching) shoulder.
