Olympics: Tokyo subway system could crumble under the Olympic weight

Tokyo's subway system, known for its punctuality, efficiency and at times overcrowded trains, will be tested when hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors descend on the Japanese capital for the 2020 Olympics, experts say. Nearly 20 million people use public transport daily in the greater Tokyo area, home to more than 35 million people.

Ravens, Steelers clash for control of AFC North

The Baltimore Ravens missed the playoffs the past three seasons, have lost three of their past four games to sit at .500 -- and yet are upbeat about a crucial game, a visit Sunday from the AFC North leaders, the Pittsburgh Steelers. "Huge game here at our stadium. It means a lot," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "We've got our season in front of us. We'd all love to have a better record than we do right now - we probably should have a better record - but the record is what it is. So that's our starting point. That's where we fight from."

Texans WR Thomas returns to Denver in Houston debut

The haste with which the Texans responded to the season-ending injury of receiver Will Fuller not only resonated within their Houston locker room, it reverberated throughout the league. Instead of hoping that internal options would suffice with just one game remaining before their bye, the Texans on Tuesday traded for Broncos veteran receiver Demaryius Thomas to fill the void left by Fuller (32 receptions, 503 yards, four touchdowns) sustaining a right ACL tear last Thursday against the Miami Dolphins. Fuller had five catches for 124 yards and a score in that 42-23 win, the Texans' fifth consecutive victory. Thomas, even with declining production, should offset some of what the Texans lost via his durability and experience as a nine-year vet.

Djokovic marks return to world number one with Paris win

Novak Djokovic celebrated his return to the summit of world tennis with a stroll into the quarter-finals at the Paris Masters as outclassed Damir Dzumhur had to retire with an injury in the second set of their third round clash on Thursday. The Serb, who learned on Wednesday that he would be back as world number one next week following Rafa Nadal's withdrawal from the tournament through injury, was leading 6-1 2-1 when the Bosnian submitted to a back problem that had flared up in the first set.

Doping: WADA head Reedie hits back at critics, won't step down

World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) president Craig Reedie hit back at his critics on Thursday and said he would not be resigning after coming under fire over the reinstatement of Russia's testing body RUSADA. The Scot bridled at comments made by U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) head Travis Tygart calling for him to step down and suggesting having an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member at the helm was "the fox guarding the henhouse".

NBA roundup: Rose scores 50 as Wolves drop Jazz

Derrick Rose scored a career-high 50 points, including the go-ahead basket with 30 seconds left, to lift the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 128-125 victory over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday in Minneapolis. Rose shot 19 of 31 from the field, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range. Karl-Anthony Towns added 28 points and 16 rebounds for the Timberwolves and Andrew Wiggins scored 19 points.

Saints host Rams in a battle of NFC heavyweights

Some are calling it a preview of the NFC Championship Game, and with good reason. When the Los Angeles Rams put their 8-0 record on the line Sunday against the 6-1 New Orleans Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, both teams realize how important this head-to-head clash could be by the end of December, when the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs is determined.

Golf: Dunne grabs the narrow first-round lead in Turkey

Irishman Paul Dunne carved out a one-shot lead on seven under par after carding a bogey-free 64 on the first day's play at the Turkish Airlines Open on Thursday. Defending champion Justin Rose, 2016 winner Thorbjorn Olesen of Norway and three-times major winner Padraig Harrington are in a three-way tie for second place at Regnum Carya Golf and Spa Resort.

Rodgers-Brady matchup highlights Packers-Patriots

Two of the NFL's legendary quarterbacks, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers, square off for only the second time on Sunday night when Brady's New England Patriots host Rodgers' Green Bay Packers. "I love watching him play," Brady said of his friend and All-Pro peer on Wednesday. "To see him up close is great. I watch him play whenever he's out there. I study a lot of the Packers' offence, I study Aaron as a player and he just does an incredible job."

NFL notebook: Still no sign of Steelers RB Bell

Le'Veon Bell did not report to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday, the day after the NFL trade deadline passed. He now has forfeited more than $7 million in salary during his holdout. Bell has two weeks to report and still be eligible to play this season. The hard deadline to report is Nov. 13.
