In a significant move for Indian cricket, former cricketer Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian men's national team. The announcement was made by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday.

Gambhir, who previously played as a left-handed opener and served as Kolkata Knight Riders' team mentor, led KKR to their third IPL trophy in 2024. Reflecting on his new role, former Zimbabwe cricketer and current Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) head coach Andy Flower praised Gambhir's strong opinions and decisiveness, calling him a proud Indian who will likely find success in his new position. Flower and Gambhir had previously worked together in the IPL during Flower's tenure as head coach of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), with Gambhir serving as a mentor.

Adding to the accolades, former Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund emphasized Gambhir's astute on-field strategies and the respect he commands from young players. With his focus on building a legacy, Gambhir aims to achieve more World Cup victories for India in the coming years. His appointment comes after the end of Rahul Dravid's tenure, which concluded with India's T20 World Cup win over South Africa. The win was marked by a stellar partnership between Virat Kohli and Axar Patel, securing India's second T20 World Cup title.
