Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse thrives on sport's biggest stages – the brighter the lights, the better for the six-time Olympic medallist.
De Grasse has not made headlines with sizzling performances so far this season, but at 29, he possesses an enviable ability to elevate his game once the Olympic torch is lit.
In an interview with Reuters, De Grasse said, "It's the highest stage possible. It's something that you've been working towards; you put all the hard work in, make a lot of sacrifices for these moments, and you just want to go out there and do your best."
Representing Canada inspires him. "When I put on that bib and uniform, knowing that I'm not just representing myself but my country, family, and friends, it gives me the motivation to give it my all," he added.
Despite a patient approach and starting with smaller meets, De Grasse recently broke the 20-second barrier in the 200 meters at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial in Hungary.
His patience is tested by rivals like Noah Lyles and Kenny Bednarek, who have posted top times this season. De Grasse remains focused on peaking at the right moment. He aims to balance his training to stay fresh and ready when it matters most.
De Grasse, Canada's most decorated male Summer Olympian, plans to race in the World Championships in Tokyo and looks forward to competing at the 2028 LA Olympics.
Reflecting on his career, De Grasse said, "If I can get to L.A., that would be special because that's where it all started for me." De Grasse remains driven by passion and enjoyment for the sport.
