Debutant Jamie Smith scored a fluent 70 runs, propelling England to a total of 371 and securing a 250-run lead over West Indies by tea on the second day of the first test at Lord's.

Joe Root contributed with 68 runs, and Harry Brook added a brisk 50 as England capitalized on favorable batting conditions to dominate. Resuming from 293-6 post-lunch, Smith partnered with Chris Woakes for a 52-run stand before Woakes was caught off Jayden Seales for 23.

Gus Atkinson, who had an impressive debut taking seven wickets, was dismissed by Jason Holder on his first ball. Smith aggressively hit two sixes and eight fours, showcasing his potential. Shoaib Bashir was run out by Mikyle Louis, and Smith became Seales' fourth victim, caught by Kirk McKenzie.

James Anderson did not face a ball in his 188th and final test, receiving a warm ovation from the crowd. Earlier, Harry Brook made a quick 50 before falling to Alzarri Joseph. Ben Stokes was bowled by Gudakesh Motie for four. Joe Root reached his 62nd test fifty but was out to another fine delivery from Motie just before lunch.

England had dismissed West Indies for 121 on the first day.
