CONMEBOL has initiated an investigation following violent clashes between Uruguay players and Colombian fans at the end of their Copa America semi-final match on Wednesday. The South American soccer governing body confirmed the probe on Thursday.
After Colombia secured a 1-0 victory in Charlotte, North Carolina, social media videos showed Uruguay players entering the stands to confront opposition fans. Key figures in the melee included Uruguay's Darwin Nunez and Ronald Araujo. Captain Jose Maria Gimenez claimed the players acted to protect their families.
In addition to the incidents in the stands, confrontations also arose on the field after the final whistle involving both players and staff from Colombia and Uruguay. CONMEBOL stated that it is committed to understanding the sequence of events and ensuring no actions tarnish the celebration of global football.
"We want to reaffirm and warn that no action will be tolerated that tarnishes this global football celebration," CONMEBOL stated. "It is unacceptable that an incident like this turns passion into violence. Therefore, no behavior that harms the sporting competition will be tolerated."
