Suryakumar Yadav has emerged as the dark horse for India's T20 captaincy through to the 2026 World Cup, potentially edging out Hardik Pandya. Pandya, who was the natural successor to the role, has made himself available for the upcoming T20 series against Sri Lanka.
However, it has emerged that Yadav, who previously captained India in eight T20Is against Australia and South Africa, is the preferred choice of new head coach Gautam Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. The new leadership decision was communicated to Pandya, aligning with a long-term strategy for stability in the team.
Pandya will sit out the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka for personal reasons, while the T20I series will proceed from July 27 to 30 in Pallekele. The squad announcement is expected shortly, with Yadav likely to lead the T20 team for the immediate future.
