Ollie Pope's scintillating century, coupled with resilient performances from opener Ben Duckett and captain Ben Stokes, drove England to an imposing total of 416 against the West Indies on the opening day of the second Test at Trent Bridge on Thursday. The home side was dismissed for 416 in 88.3 overs by stumps on Day 1.

The West Indies captain, Kraigg Brathwaite, opted to bowl first after winning the toss. England's openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett took to the field, but Crawley was sent back on the third ball of the match by Alzarri Joseph, leaving the score at 0.

Ollie Pope joined Duckett at the crease, and the pair built a solid partnership of 105 runs. Duckett played a sparkling innings, scoring 71 off 59 balls with 14 boundaries, before being dismissed in the 19th over. Experienced batsman Joe Root then took charge but was out for 14 runs, bringing England's total to 142. Harry Brook partnered with Pope for a 59-run stand before being dismissed for 36 runs. Pope's outstanding innings of 121 off 161 balls, including 15 boundaries and a six, ended in the 58th over.

Post Pope's departure, England was at 281/5 in 57.1 overs. Contributions from Stokes (69 off 104), Chris Woakes (37 off 48), and Jamie Smith (36 off 54) helped push the score to 416 before the team was bowled out in the penultimate over of the day. Alzarri Joseph was the top wicket-taker for West Indies with figures of 3-98, while Jayden Seales, Kevin Sinclair, and Kavem Hodge took two wickets each. Shamar Joseph also chipped in with a wicket.
