The All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey confirmed that the new head coach for the national team will be chosen based on the ability to deliver results, eschewing any bias towards high-profile candidates.

The AIFF Executive Committee is set to convene soon to select a successor for Igor Stimac, who stepped down after a dismal record of nine losses and two draws in his last 12 games.

“Results are crucial. We're looking for someone who can elevate Indian football and enhance the national team’s performance,” said Chaubey in an interview with PTI videos.

The incoming coach will face significant challenges, including a tri-nation tournament in October with hosts Vietnam and Lebanon.

Chaubey expressed hope that the new coach would achieve positive outcomes in these fixtures.

“We plan to optimize all upcoming FIFA windows—from September to March next year—to provide our players with international exposure,” Chaubey added.

Chaubey reported an overwhelming response for the head coach position, with 291 applicants, narrowed down to 17 finalists, both Indian and foreign.

“We are in continued discussions with the technical committee. Former captain IM Vijayan, currently abroad, will join our discussions virtually,” Chaubey stated.

Chaubey also pointed out players like Lallianzuala Chhangte, who won Best Men’s Player at the AIFF awards, as potential successors to retired skipper Sunil Chhetri.

“Finding a successor to Sunil Chhetri concerns everyone. Chhangte, the player of the year, has immense potential and could have a long, successful career,” he noted.
