Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal reached the finals of the ongoing Nordea Open on Saturday after defeating Duje Ajdukovic in a hard-fought semifinal clash. This marks his first title clash in over two years. Nadal overcame Ajdukovic in a two-hour, 13-minute battle, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, according to the ATP's official website.
Nadal's journey to the final included a four-hour marathon victory against Mariano Navone on Friday, necessitating recovery and preparation time for his first ATP head-to-head clash against the Croatian. Despite dropping the first set and serve in the opening game of the second set, Nadal turned the match around by breaking Ajdukovic's serve five times across the second and third sets. "It was a tough match with one of the best backhands I’ve faced. It was difficult, but I found a way to survive," Nadal told ATP’s website after the match.
Despite nearly losing a double-break lead in the deciding set, Nadal's consistency, particularly in his return game, was key. He converted all six break points against Ajdukovic. Expressing his relief and happiness, Nadal said, "It’s great to be back in a final after two years. Many challenges, including a significant hip surgery, made the journey tough, but matches like these help improve my game."
Nadal now faces seventh seed Nuno Borges in the final, who secured his place by defeating Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-3, 6-4. This match will be Nadal's 11th win of the season against eight losses, as he strives for his first title in two years. (ANI)
