Hamilton Struggles with Pole Positions as Mercedes Faces Performance Issues

Lewis Hamilton, boasting a record 104 Formula One pole positions, has found recent Saturdays challenging. Hungary marked a year since he last qualified fastest, highlighting the struggles faced by Mercedes' seven-time world champion.

Hamilton's emotional return to victory at Silverstone on July 7, his first win since 2021, contrasts with his qualifying performances this year. The 39-year-old has outqualified teammate George Russell only thrice in 2024. At the Hungaroring, a circuit where he holds a record nine career poles, Hamilton managed only fifth place while Russell lagged in 17th.

Mercedes' team boss Toto Wolff expressed disappointment, calling it a 'total underperformance.' Despite challenges with the current car generation not suiting Hamilton's style, the team's trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin remains optimistic. Shovlin believes Hamilton's confidence is returning as he adapts to the car, with hopes for more pole positions before his transition to Ferrari in 2025.
