Stan Bowman Joins Edmonton Oilers as New GM
The Edmonton Oilers have appointed Stan Bowman as their new general manager and executive vice president of hockey operations. Bowman, who previously held various roles with the Chicago Blackhawks, was cleared to seek NHL employment again after a suspension related to a sexual assault scandal. His hiring aims to propel the Oilers to Stanley Cup success.
The Edmonton Oilers have named former Chicago Blackhawks executive Stan Bowman as their new general manager and executive vice president of hockey operations, the National Hockey League team announced Wednesday. This comes three weeks after the NHL declared Bowman and two other Blackhawks executives eligible for re-employment following punishments over a sexual assault scandal more than two years ago.
“I believe his vast experience and proven success in this role, together with the important work he has done in his time away from the game, fits our goal of being best in class when it comes to all facets of our organization,” said Oilers CEO of Hockey Operations Jeff Jackson in a news release. “Through our many conversations, we share a common vision of where we are as a team and what is required to achieve another Stanley Cup title.”
Bowman, former Chicago coach Joel Quenneville, and executive Al MacIsaac were barred from NHL roles since October 2021 due to their inadequate response to 2010 allegations of sexual assault by the team’s video coach. An investigation commissioned by the Blackhawks in 2021 concluded team officials mishandled the allegations raised by then-player Kyle Beach. Bowman and MacIsaac resigned from their roles following the report, and Quenneville resigned as coach of the Florida Panthers after meeting with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.
Stan Bowman, son of Hall of Fame coach Scotty Bowman, began his Chicago front-office career in 2001 and climbed the ranks to become general manager in July 2009. He led Chicago to three Stanley Cup titles during his tenure. Bowman now replaces Ken Holland as the GM of an Oilers team that lost the Stanley Cup Final's decisive seventh game to the Florida Panthers in June.
