Raj Kumar Pal, a key midfielder for the Indian Men's Hockey Team, is gearing up to represent India in the Paris Olympics 2024. His journey began in the streets of Karampur and he first gained attention in 2018 during a five-nation U-23 tournament in Belgium. Raj Kumar is the youngest of three brothers, all of whom are hockey players. Under the mentorship of coach Tej Bahadur Singh at Meghbaran stadium, Raj Kumar, along with his brothers Jokhan and Raju, honed his skills from a young age, starting at just 10 years old.
In 2012, Raj Kumar joined the SAI Lucknow hostel and drew inspiration from Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, a close friend and former batchmate of Jokhan. Raj Kumar credits Lalit for motivating him and guiding him through the challenges of the sport. 'Lalit bhai always supported me, helping me learn from my mistakes and improve,' Raj Kumar said.
Raj Kumar's talent was further recognized by High-performance director David John at the SAI Hostel in 2018 during the Senior National Championships, leading to his call-up for the senior Indian men's hockey team camp. Now, with 53 international caps to his name, Raj Kumar is fully focused on the Paris Olympics. 'My entire focus is on Paris Olympics. I know what is at stake here,' he said. The dream of winning an Olympic medal feels closer than ever for Raj Kumar, as he aims to bring glory to his family and country.
