Angelique Kerber to Retire After Paris 2024 Olympics
Three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber announced her retirement from tennis after the 2024 Paris Olympics. The former world number one, who has won Australian Open, U.S. Open, and Wimbledon, aims to end her career at the prestigious global event. Kerber returned to the WTA Tour after 18 months on maternity leave.
Three-time Grand Slam champion and Rio Olympics silver medallist Angelique Kerber will retire from tennis after the Paris Games, the German confirmed on Thursday.
Former world number one Kerber, who turned 36, clinched the singles final at Rio 2016, losing to Puerto Rican Monica Puig, and secured the Australian Open and U.S. Open titles the same year. She added the Wimbledon crown to her achievements two years later. Kerber announced on social media that Paris would mark the conclusion of her illustrious career.
'Before the @Olympics begin, I can already say that I will never forget #Paris2024, because it will be my last professional tournament as a tennis player,' Kerber expressed, noting her gratitude towards the sport despite the difficult decision.
'The Olympics I've participated in so far have been more than just competitions; they represent different chapters of my life as a tennis player: the climb, the peak ... and now, the finish line,' she said. Kerber rejoined the WTA Tour earlier this season following 18 months of maternity leave.
The draw for the Paris Olympics tennis tournament, set to run from July 27 to August 4 at Roland Garros, will take place on Thursday.
