Australian Swimming Coach Faces Backlash for Supporting Rival Athlete

An Australian swimming coach, Michael Palfrey, ignited controversy within his team after expressing support for a South Korean swimmer over his own country's athletes. Head coach Rohan Taylor labeled Palfrey's comments as 'un-Australian' and is considering sending him home from the Olympics. The incident has stirred mixed reactions among team members.

In a surprising turn of events, Australian swimming coach Michael Palfrey has faced backlash from his own team after expressing support for a South Korean athlete over his country's medal contenders. The controversy erupted just days before the Olympic swimming competitions are set to begin.

Head coach Rohan Taylor branded Palfrey's comments as 'un-Australian' and revealed that the coach might be sent back home before the games commence at the La Defense Arena in Paris. 'Very disappointed. Extremely disappointed,' Taylor remarked. 'For a coach on our team to promote another athlete ahead of our athletes is not acceptable.'

Palfrey, who coaches some of Australia’s top swimmers, previously worked with South Korean men's 400-meter freestyle world champion Kim Woo-min. In a South Korean television interview, Palfrey expressed hope that Kim would win gold, sparking outrage within the Australian team.

Despite Palfrey's apology for the lapse in judgment, the head coach is meeting with athletes to decide if Palfrey should remain at the Olympics. Australian swimmer Bronte Campbell noted that the incident has 'barely caused a ripple' within the team, while Zac Stubblety-Cook acknowledged the discord but maintained it hasn't 'rocked the boat too much.'

As the Olympics approach, Taylor stressed the team's focus on performance and controlling elements within their command. 'It's very disappointing to me that one of our coaches promoted another athlete ahead of our athletes,' Taylor concluded.
