FEI Faces Horse Welfare Controversy Amid Olympic Future Concerns

The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) is confident that equestrian sports will remain in the Olympics amid horse abuse controversies. FEI has suspended several athletes, including Charlotte Dujardin, following allegations of horse mistreatment. FEI has introduced 37 measures to improve horse welfare after incidents at the Tokyo Olympics.

The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) remains confident that equestrian sports will retain their place in the Olympic programme despite facing numerous horse abuse allegations, according to FEI President Ingmar de Vos.

On Tuesday, the FEI suspended six-time Olympic medallist Charlotte Dujardin over her training methods after a video surfaced showing her whipping a horse's legs multiple times. This incident has sparked a broader debate about the ethics of equestrian sports.

Despite the outcry, De Vos expressed optimism that equestrian events such as eventing, dressage, and show jumping will be part of the Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. “We have been doing so much for horse welfare. We will be on the programme in Los Angeles and Brisbane,” he stated.

The FEI was compelled to address horse welfare challenges following the Tokyo Olympics, where incidents marred the sports' reputation. In 2021, a horse died in a cross-country event, another suffered severe nose bleeding from jumping, and spectators were horrified by scenes of abuse in modern pentathlon.

FEI Chief Veterinarian Goran Akerstrom mentioned that the organization has introduced an action plan with 37 measures aimed at protecting horses. These measures include rules for the tightness of nosebands and flexible cross-country obstacles to prevent severe accidents. Earlier this year, Colombian dressage competitor Cesar Parra was suspended over videos of alleged animal abuse.

This month, Denmark's national equestrian body initiated disciplinary proceedings against Carina Cassoe Kruth following similar allegations, as reported by local media.
