Unified super middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez will clash with undefeated contender Edgar Berlanga Jr. on September 14 in Las Vegas, Alvarez confirmed on Thursday.
Alvarez, a 34-year-old from Mexico, rose to become the unified 168 lb (76.2 kg) champion after defeating Caleb Plant in 2021. He has successfully defended his WBA (Super), WBC, WBO, and IBF belts four times, the latest being a unanimous decision over Jaime Munguia in May. However, media reports indicate that Alvarez may be stripped of his IBF title before the Berlanga fight for not facing mandatory challenger William Scull.
Berlanga, a 27-year-old born in New York to Puerto Rican parents, boasts an impressive professional record of 22-0. He recently secured a knockout win over former IBO light heavyweight champion Padraig McCrory in February. Berlanga described the upcoming bout as 'the biggest fight in Puerto Rico vs Mexico boxing history' on Instagram.
