Josh "Jablett" Ablett has been kicked off eSports organization Team Envy for making what the team termed "insensitive comments" related to the deaths of 96 people and the injuries of hundreds more at a soccer match in Sheffield, England, in 1989. During what appeared to be a group chat, one person referred to "the 96," referring to those killed in a human crush of people in standing room areas on April 15, 1989, at Hillsborough Stadium. Another 766 people were injured in what is still known as the worst disaster in British sports.

Saints TE Watson to retire at season's end

New Orleans Saints tight end Benjamin Watson said Thursday he will retire at the conclusion of his 15th season in the NFL. Watson, who turned 38 on Dec. 18, has played in 194 regular-season games and 11 playoff games since New England drafted him in the first round in 2004.

NBA roundup: Leonard, Raptors ends Heat's win streak

Former LA Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid dies at 65

Former Los Angeles Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid, the winningest coach in MLS history who was hospitalized at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center three weeks ago in need of a heart transplant, died Tuesday at the age of 65. Schmid had a history of heart problems, and members of the Galaxy expressed concern about his health last season. The coach resigned from leading the Galaxy in September.

Report: DeSean Jackson tells Bucs he wants out of Tampa

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson has told the Tampa Bay Bucs that he wants out of his contract to play elsewhere next year, ESPN reported Thursday. The Bucs would clear $10 million in cap space by releasing him. Jackson is making $11 million this season.

Belichick looks to Jets, Brady to the future

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is thinking long-term. His coach, Bill Belichick, is thinking short-term, as usual. Belichick responded on Wednesday to a radio interview Brady did earlier this week, when he recommitted to playing as long as possible. The five-time Super Bowl champion, who on Sunday led the Patriots to their 10th straight division title, told Westwood One radio that he intends to return in 2019 for a 20th NFL season.

LeBron to miss game against Sacramento with strained groin

LeBron James will not travel to Sacramento for the Los Angeles Lakers' game Thursday night against the Kings. James is officially day-to-day after straining his left groin during the Lakers' victory over the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night. An MRI came back clean on Wednesday, but James is expected to miss a few games out of an abundance of caution.

Report: Tiger skipping Tournament of Champions

Tiger Woods has opted against playing in January's Tournament of Champions, choosing instead to spend "more time with family and friends over the holiday," ESPN reported Thursday. It would have been Woods' first TOC since 2005. He qualified for the winners-only tournament by winning the Tour Championship (http://fieldlevelmedia.com/tiger-no-time-to-soak-in-victory) in September, his 80th career PGA Tour victory.

Report: Packers interview ex-Lions, Colts coach Caldwell

The Green Bay Packers have interviewed former Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell for the same position in Green Bay, Pro Football Talk reported Wednesday. It's the first reported head-coaching interview made by any team this year.

Schumacher in F1's thoughts as stricken great turns 50

Michael Schumacher is in Formula One's thoughts as the seven times world champion approaches his 50th birthday, five years on from the near-fatal skiing accident that has left the Ferrari great fighting brain injuries behind a wall of secrecy. The German, still the sport's most successful driver in terms of wins (91) and titles, will reach his half century on Jan. 3.
