UN Calls for Olympic Truce Amid Global Conflicts

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on countries worldwide to halt armed conflicts in observance of the Olympic truce, ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics set to begin on Friday.

During a meeting with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, Guterres emphasized the Games as an opportunity for peace. 'I want to express the total support of the United Nations to the IOC,' Guterres stated, highlighting the growing global conflicts.

'The horrendous suffering in Gaza, the seemingly endless war in Ukraine, and the severe suffering from Sudan to the DRC, from the Sahel to Myanmar, underline the need for peace,' he added. Guterres called for a halt to conflicts during the games, echoing the ancient Greek tradition of the Olympic truce.

With over 10,500 athletes from 206 nations participating, including neutrals from Russia and Belarus, and a Palestinian team, Guterres stressed the importance of unity and peace in these troubled times.
