With PV Sindhu and Sharath Kamal as flagbearers, a 78-strong Indian contingent made a grand entrance in the Parade of Nations at the River Seine during the Paris Olympics 2024 opening ceremony. Dressed in traditional attire, they greeted fans with enthusiasm despite the rainy weather.
The excitement was undampened as French football legend Zinedine Zidane appeared in a pre-recorded video, carrying the Olympic flame. The Parade began at Pont d'Austerlitz with Greece, led by NBA star Giannis Antetekounmpo and race walker Antigoni Ntrismpioti. Lady Gaga delivered a mesmerising performance, followed by heavy-metal band Gojira and opera singer Marina Viotti.
India's contingent, comprising 117 athletes across 16 sports disciplines, will compete for 95 medals. The mixed team air rifle event on Saturday at the National Shooting Centre in Chateauroux will offer India's first chance for a medal, featuring competitors Sandeep Singh, Elavenil Valarivan, Arjun Babuta, and Ramita Jindal.
