Ace Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen initiated his maiden Olympic campaign with a remarkable performance, overcoming Tokyo Games semifinalist Kevin Cordon of Guatemala in straight games during a men's singles group match on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Sen secured a 21-8, 22-20 victory against the reigning Pan American champion Cordon in a 42-minute contest.

Sen, who boasts a gold medal from the 2022 Commonwealth Games and a bronze from the 2021 World Championships, is set to compete against Julien Carraggi of Belgium in his next group match on Monday.

Despite a strong comeback from Cordon in the second game, Sen maintained his composure to clinch the win, starting his Olympic journey on a high note.

Sen dominated the first game, winning it in just 14 minutes, but faced stiffer resistance in the second game as Cordon rallied to a 6-2 lead.

Even though Sen was more error-prone in the second game, trailing 7-12 at the change of ends, his resilience and determination saw him level the score and eventually win the match.

Guided by the legendary Prakash Padukone and Vimal Kumar, Sen saved his best for the crucial moments, winning the last four points to seal the victory.
