Chelsea Coach Enzo Maresca's New Tactical Journey: Pre-Season Struggles
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca commented on his team’s difficulty adjusting to his tactical style following a 4-1 loss to Celtic in a pre-season friendly. Despite some confusion both on and off the ball, Maresca remains optimistic about Chelsea’s readiness for their Premier League opener.
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca acknowledged his players' struggles to adapt to his tactics following a 4-1 defeat to Celtic in Indiana during a pre-season friendly on Saturday. Only a last-minute penalty by Christopher Nkunku provided any satisfaction for the Premier League team, playing at the University of Notre Dame. The match marked Maresca's second game at the helm after a 2-2 draw with League One side Wrexham in California earlier that week.
Maresca emphasized the need for improvement off the ball, pointing out that players sometimes mix up when to play short and when to go long. He mentioned maintaining a high line but acknowledged the necessity to drop back when the ball is not under pressure, a characteristic that still confuses some team members. This, he stressed, is part of the learning process in adopting a new tactical approach.
Despite the recent poor results, Maresca, 44, expressed confidence that his team will be prepared for their Premier League opener against reigning champions Manchester City on August 18.
