England skipper Ben Stokes smashed the fastest half-century for his country in Test history, propelling England to a dominant 3-0 series victory over the West Indies at Edgbaston. The home side clinched the series whitewash with a resounding win in Birmingham on Sunday.
Stokes' blistering 24-ball fifty helped England chase down an 82-run target in just 7.2 overs. This remarkable feat is the joint-third-fastest fifty in Test cricket, with Pakistan's Misbah-ul-Haq holding the overall record. Stokes, alongside Ben Duckett, formed a rapid 87-run partnership, surpassing the previous record set by Marcus Trescothick and Michael Vaughan in 2002.
England's first fifty came in a mere 4.2 overs, marking the fastest in Test history. Stokes now holds the highest strike rate for an opener in men's Tests, with his innings boosting his strike rate to 158.82, according to Wisden.
Young pacer Gus Atkinson was the standout bowler of the series, capturing 22 wickets—the highest tally by an England bowler in a three-match series since Ryan Sidebottom in 2008. Atkinson's 22 wickets also set a record for a bilateral home series.
West Indies opted to bat first, posting 282/10 in their first innings, thanks to contributions from skipper Kraigg Brathwaite, Jason Holder, and Joshua Da Silva. Atkinson and Chris Woakes led England's bowling attack. In response, England overcame a shaky start to post 376, driven by key partnerships from Joe Root, Stokes, Jamie Smith, and Woakes. Alzarri Joseph was the pick of the bowlers for the West Indies.
In their second innings, the West Indies managed just 175 runs, with only Mikyle Louis and Kavem Hodge registering fifties. Mark Wood's five-wicket haul sealed England’s comprehensive win, with the pacer conceding just nine runs in a decisive spell. (ANI)
